How Often Should You Clean a Cat Litter Box?

Gijs Raaijmakers·10. marca 2026

The Short Answer

Solid waste: every day. Urine (clay litter): every day. Full litter change: every 2–4 weeks (clay) or every 4–6 weeks (wood pellets). Deep wash: monthly.

Most cat owners clean less frequently than this — and their cats notice.

The Full Cleaning Schedule

Task Clumping clay Wood pellets (GIZMO double-layer)
Scoop solid waste Daily Daily (~10 seconds)
Remove urine Daily (scoop clumps) Not needed, as sawdust absorbs moist
Top up litter As needed Every 3–5 days
Full litter change Every 2 weeks 1-2 months
Deep wash with soap Monthly 1-2 months

Why Daily Scooping Is Non-Negotiable

Cats are fastidiously clean animals. In the wild, they would never return to a soiled spot. Your domestic cat operates with the same instinct — and if the box isn't clean enough, they'll find somewhere that is.

Beyond cat behaviour, the chemistry is straightforward: urine left in warm litter begins producing ammonia within hours. Solid waste adds digestive bacteria. The longer waste sits, the stronger the smell, and the harder it becomes to neutralise without a full clean.

Daily scooping is the single most effective odor control measure available. It costs under two minutes a day.

What Happens If You Skip Cleaning

One day: minimal impact for most cats. Two days: increased odor, possible hesitation from sensitive cats. Three or more days: many cats will seek alternatives — laundry, corners, plant pots. Once a cat establishes a new toilet spot, retraining takes significant effort.

Beyond behaviour, regularly soiled litter is a health risk. Ammonia irritates cats' respiratory systems. In multi-cat households, a dirty shared box is a source of stress and territorial conflict that contributes to inappropriate elimination and urinary tract problems.

The Weekly and Monthly Tasks

Weekly (wood pellet double-layer system): Empty the lower collection tray, which contains the used sawdust with dried urine. Rinse with water and dry. Top up fresh pellets in the upper tray to maintain a 2cm depth, and sprinkle 1 or 2 hands in the bottom tray to collect the first future puddle of urine. This takes about 5 minutes.

1-2 months (all systems): Empty all litter. Wash both trays with warm water and mild dish soap. Rinse thoroughly — soap residue can deter cats from using the box. Allow to air dry completely before refilling. This resets any bacteria that has accumulated on the box surface.

Signs Your Box Needs Cleaning Now

  • You can smell it from more than a metre away
  • Your cat is circling the box or standing at the edge without entering
  • Visible waste on the litter surface
  • Litter surface looks wet or discoloured
  • Your cat is eliminating outside the box

How to Make Cleaning Easier

The biggest barrier to daily scooping is inconvenience — the scoop is in another room, the bag is used up, the bin is full. Keep everything within arm's reach of the box: a scoop, a small bin with bags, and a surface wipe. GIZMO's design makes this especially fast: a dedicated scoop clips to the side of the box, it has bags ready available through the bag compartment in the handle, and the solid waste sits on the clean, dry surface ready to remove in seconds.
